Liqueurs | Varnelli
The Varnelli Family has been producing spirits in the shadow of the Marches beautiful Sibillini Mountains since 1868.
Girolamo Varnelli was a keen herbalist who used his knowledge to create the first product, Amaro Sibilla, a rich digestive bitter tonic which was awarded the Gold Medal in 1909 at the International Exhibition in Turin and established the Varnelli legacy.
In the course of more than 140 years, Distilleria Varnelli has established itself as one of Italy’s leading producers of distinguished and refined liqueurs.
Today the family is run by the fourth generation of Varnelli heirs: Elda (Chairman of the Board), Gigliola Simonetta, Mari Donatella and Orietta Maria. The women continue to play an active role in the production of Varnelli products to protect the recipes and secrets that have been passed down from generation to generation.
Varnelli products are made using age old recipes of distilled spirits infused with roots, barks, spices, herbs and fruits, and are free of artificial colours or flavour essences.
VARNELLI L'ANICE
First awarded in 1950 as "the best Italian dry anise", Varnelli is a unique flavour among the Mediterranean aniseed drinks. It hooks you at the first taste.
Clear, brilliant, transparent, with bluish highlights, its intense and persistent aroma of aniseed develops into a fragrance of wild fennel, dill and cumin, enriched with floral scents. All-enveloping, full-bodied, medium dry on the palate.
Varnelli is a very versatile liqueur. Drink it neat or on the rocks, with dark chocolate or while smoking your favourite cigar. It is an excellent refreshing drink if added to water, an innovative ingredient for cocktails but even for surprising culinary dishes. Enjoy Varnelli on ice cream or on fruit, in sorbet and as Italian people usually use it: “the best lacing for coffee”.
AMARO SIBILLA
Since 1868 Amaro Sibilla has been obtained from a decoction of herbs, roots and barks prepared over a wood fire and sweetened with honey.
A long ageing and decanting period is then needed in order to get a transparent smooth tasting product.
Dense and dark brown, on the palate the first impression of sweetness due to honey is then followed by an intense bitter tannic taste with a long-length finish. This roughness is enriched by fine aromas of chestnuts, dried fruit, vanilla and coffee.
Amaro Sibilla is perfect after a meal, neat, on the rocks, as a hot drink with lemon or orange slices. It is a versatile ingredient in cocktails and long drinks. Try with white vermouth and some drops of gin. Also try adding to soda, tonic water or orange juice.
AMARO TONICO DIGESTIVO
This intriguing amaro is obtained from a decoction of herbs, roots and barks which are prepared over a wood fire. Only pure honey is used to sweeten this blend.
It is an opaque tobacco coloured with brick red shades.
The aromas of nearly stewed ripe fruit and sultana, with scents of gentian, rhubarb, sandalwood, and honey.
On the Palate it is dry, bitter, warm. Its tannic structure is powerful: somewhat drying to the palate, it is countered by intense salivation at the side walls of the mouth. Hard notes due to acids and tannins are dominant.
CAFFE MOKA
Moka Varnelli is a fine liqueur obtained with real italian espresso according to a traditional recipe of the Varnelli family. It needs at least 6 months of seasoning and settling in order to acquire its particular taste and appearance.
This dark coffee coloured liqueur has the distinctive aroma of espresso blends with notes of cocoa, vanilla, spices, tobacco, honey and caramel.
The taste is pleasantly sweet and well balanced, the aromas are persistent.
Enjoy neat, on ice or in cocktails. Gives a wonderful rich warm coffee lift to tiramisu and other desserts.
PUNCH alla FIAMA MANDARINO
This fine liqueur has a base of a special Martinica rum selected by the Varnelli family. It is a refined expression of the Italian tradition of "Punch"- liqueurs to be drunk hot in the wintertime.
The attractive bright amber drink features scents of caramelized fruit and citrus zest in alcohol, accompanied by vanilla and roasted coffee.
Aromatic flavors of coffee blended with caramel, roast hazelnuts, cocoa, raisins and smokiness persist in the mouth, giving a special richness to the taste. The addition of ice (or iced water) enhances it even further, creating predominantly bitter and smoky notes.
